About Department

Department of English, established in 1968, offers UG & PG Programmes in English. The syllabus of both the programmes is framed by the affiliating University i.e. Shivaji University, Kolhapur. The syllabus is highly useful for students to acquire basic communication skills, soft skills, life skills, etc. It introduces students with English language, literature and its various genres. The department has developed its own Departmental Library which consists of more than 150 reference books. The English Language Laboratory is well-equipped with ICT tools which enriches experiential learning of students in terms of communication skills. It also develops scientific approach of the learners in phonetics and phonology. The laboratory consists of 21 Computers, 21 Headphones, and Internet Connectivity through LAN & WiFi.

The Department runs certificate courses in ‘Basic English Grammar’, ‘Spoken English’, ‘Soft-Skills and Spoken English’, ‘English Communication in Digital Marketing’ and Add-on Course in ‘Research Methodology’ which help students to improve language skills, build communicative competence and develop research aptitude. The Best Practice of the department is ‘Field Visit for Interaction with Foreigners’ which is arranged for capacity building of students and raise their confidence in spoken English.

The department boasts its outstanding achievements in Avishkar Research Competitions, English Elocution Competitions, University Merit Scholarships, and above all Mr. Akarshan Mane (First Batch Student of M. A. 2020-21) who qualified SET Exam in first attempt in September, 2021 and NET with JRF in November, 2022.

Short Term Courses

English is a window to the world. As India is a country having unity in diversity, it is English that unites Indians across the country along with Hindi as a National Language. The Department of English runs bridge courses like Basic English Grammar, Soft Skills and Spoken English mainly to build confidence among the rural students who are either shy by nature or lag behind due to inferiority complex. These courses become helpful for such students fetching jobs in the corporate world.

Objectives of Short Term Courses:

Language Laboratory

The English Language Laboratory is equipped with the software DLM (Digital Linguistic Mentor) and other ICT tools. Extension Activities & Best Practices

Best Practice – Field Visit

The tourists from different nationalities visit the tourist Places like Mahabaleshwar, Kas Plateau, Thoseghar Waterfall and Sajjangarh Fort. The Department undertakes field visit entitled Interaction with the Foreigners. This activity is conducted with the prime objective of students’ interaction with foreigners which ultimately result in capacity building in communication.

Objectives

  • To build confidence among the students while interacting with the outsiders and enhance their communicative capability.
  • To acquaint students with the pronunciations of the foreigners.
  • To build confidence among the students
  • To make the students aware of the socio-cultural and educational environment in foreign countries through arranging interactions with the foreigners.
  • To introduce students with report writing.
  • Extension Activity

The extension activity of the department is ‘Grammar Teaching at Nearby High Schools’ which is organized to inculcate presentation and teaching skills among the students.
